The Livelihood Development Initiatives’ Global Micro Forest Program is a strategic initiative designed to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem degradation by establishing a network of micro forests worldwide, with an initial focus on Africa. Aligned with the organization’s Climate Change Program (2024-2029), this program contributes significantly to global efforts aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of climate change while fostering sustainable development.

Objectives

The program outlines six key objectives to guide its implementation:
  • Establishing 100 micro forests across Africa by 2030, covering a total area of 1,000 hectares.
  • Sequestering 500,000 tons of CO2 equivalent through afforestation and reforestation efforts.
  • Promoting biodiversity conservation through the planting of native species and enhancing ecosystem services to support local wildlife.
  • Engaging local communities in micro forest management through comprehensive training and capacity-building programs.
  • Developing sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities, such as eco-tourism and the sustainable harvesting of forest products.
  • Monitoring and evaluating program impact rigorously, facilitating the sharing of best practices and lessons learned on a global scale.

Implementation Strategy:

The implementation strategy of the Global Micro Forest Program encompasses the following steps: Collaborating with local organizations, governments, and communities to identify suitable locations and ensure local ownership and engagement.
  • Conducting thorough feasibility studies to assess factors such as soil quality, water availability, and compliance with local regulations.
